The use of hydrophobic hollow fibre membranes for absorption of gases into a liquid stream has a very great potential in terms of overall efficiency compared to other contacting methods. This is largely due to the increased surface area per unit volume which exists when hollow fibres are employed. These systems also have the advantage that they do not suffer from interfacial area reductions at low flows or flooding at high flow rates. Also unlike immobilised liquid membranes they are capable of stable operation over long periods of time.The present proposal has the aim of establishing the main criteria for efficient operation of these hollow fibre contactors. In particular, the location of the main mass transfer resistance under varying conditions of flow rates, fibre packing density and the nature of the liquid absorbent will be determined. Tests will be conducted using SO2 and CO2 singly and as a mixture compared with models developed during the research.
