Summary on Grant Application Form |
The concept of biodegradable prostatic stents provides a potential alternative to transurethral prostatectomy and present generation of prostatic stents. The biodegradable material combines the established medical application of polyethylene oxide hydrogels, their property of absorbing water and swelling, and the known susceptibility of the prostate to ischaemia. This project addresses the development of a suitable biodegradable material which can be formed into a prostatic stent of an appropriate design. The effect of contact of the stent with urine and pressure on the prostate will be assessed.
