Summary on Grant Application Form
To investigate the provision of support systems for professional people in the creative aspects of their work by providing direct end user knowledge manipulation. To study how the user can have access to the inferencing methods, used to apply the knowledge in the system, as well as to the knowledge itself. To investigate the problem by establishing an active collaboration with RCAST, Tokyo University.Progress:The project began in March 1994: one researcher was appointed from March 1st and the second in October, 1994.The collaboration with Tokyo University was established and a visit from Professor Ohsuga followed by a visit from the relevant RCAST team to install the KAUS system at LUTCHI took place. A reciprocal visit to Tokyo was made to develop the collaboration more fully.The integration of KAUS with LUTCHIs infrastructure, specifically the FOCUS user interface software has been completed. Work on a preliminary demonstrator support system, using this system, has been completed As part of the investigations, a visit to Coventry Design Centre and Lancaster Engineering Design Centre took place. Close contact has also been established with the Cambridge Engineering Design Centre. Conferences attended include CHI94 and UIST94. Discussions with Lotus Engineering have continued to take place on both sites. Two papers arising from the first years work have been accepted for presentation at the Lancaster Engineering Design Workshop, 1995: Candy, L., Edmonds, E.A. & Patrick, D.J.
