The distortional buckling of cold-formed sections is a phenomenon whose importance has only been recognised relatively recently. It is associated with a distortion of the cross-section whereby the fold lines move relative to each other and is therefore rather difficult to deal with analytically. This situation is made more complicated by the possible interaction of distortional buckling with the other local and lateral-torsional buckling modes. Generalised Beam Theory (GBT) is a fundamental contribution to the theory of structures which has been developed at Darmstadt in Germany and deserves to be much better known. In its second-order form, it provides a powerful and elegant method of analyzing both distortional and interactive buckling problems. This application is for funding to apply GBT to these problems with a view to drafting much-needed model clauses for inclusion in codes of practice for the design of cold-formed sections. By publications and by the provision of public-domain software, the proposed programme of research will also allow GBT to be made more readily available to other researchers in the English-speaking world.
