To investigate new designs of adaptive RAKE receiver based on signal spectrum analysis to measure Doppler and subsequent prediction to estimate the signal values.To conduct this operation separately in parallel on each resolved multipath signal component.To fully simulate the performance of this spread spectrum receiver design.Progress:In accordance with the aims and objectives of the proposal, the research work has addressed the following areas: Channel simulation software - the COST 207 model, developed by a European Communities working group, was adopted, and modified to operate at 1.8GHz. Software for simulating channel fading using this model was developed, and subsequently used to calculate bit error rate (BER) statistics of the receiver system developed.Predictor design - methods of using the frequency domain representation of specific delays of the time varying channel impulse response as measured by a RAKE receiver were investigated, and one particular strategy based on least squares (LS) prediction was adopted for analysis.General software - this has been completed, with software to collate the results of the simulation system, and software to perform a generalised sliding fast Fourier transform (GSFFT) used to calculate the correlation coefficients required by the LS algorithrn.Methods for dealing with stationary and non-stationary channels were examined, with performance and stability issues being examined in detail using software simulation as an evaluation tool. A novel scheme based on conditional selection for updating the predictor weights was developed with the aim of improving stability was examined and evaluated with a certain degree of success resulting from its application to the problem.Work from this research has been published at an IEE Colloquium, and the IEEE conference, PIMRC '94, with papers to be published at two further IEEE events, namely a workshop on Multipath Methods held at Stratholyde, and ICC '95. A full journal paper is under review for IEE Proceedings - Communications.
