It is known that the structures of aggregates in colloidal dispersons are very sensitive to the presence of a shear stress in the fluid. It is proposed to study aggregate and gel formation in increasingly concentrated dispersions of industrially important clays, as well as model systems of polystyrene microspheres. The structural effects are of significance with respect to the rate at which aggregates or a gel are formed, as well as being important for the commercial use of the clays. Three complementary techniques, namely, static and dynamic light scattering, low-angle and Bragg X-ray diffraction, and stress/strain rheometry, will be used to determine aggregate or gel structure, particle-particle and cluster-cluster interactions, and rates of aggregate formation and break-up (ie the increase and decrease in overall order), all whilst under the influence of applied shear fields.
