Summary on Grant Application Form |
Real-time dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) of time-dependent polymer systems will be studied using a modern dielectric spectrometer to be provided under this grant. The main research programme will be the study of bulk uncatalysed and catalysed thermosetting reactions of epoxide-amine mixtures and bulk-addition polymerisations (thermal and photochemical) of diacrylate monomers. Studies will also be made using real-time DRS of the dynamics of phase separation in PVME/PStyrene blends, of crystallisation in amorphous polyesters and volume-relaxation phenomena in poly(vinyl acetate). Importantly, the kinetics of the thermosetting reactions will be studied, in parallel, using dsc and a comparison of the DRS and dsc data will provide the required correlations between molecular dynamics and chemical kinetics as a reaction proceeds to its diffusion-controlled limit. Special emphasis will be placed on theoretical analysis of data using phenomenological and molecular theories of reactions and relaxation behaviour. The applications of the real-time DRS method to these systems will be demonstrated and will lead to collaborative researches with other scientists in the UK using the equipment provided by the grant.
