Summary on Grant Application Form |
This collaborative project will research fault tolerant electric drives for safety critical systems, with particular emphasis on avionic applications. The research will produce power electronic converter topologies and electrical machine designs which offer high functionality in the event of component failures, with the minimum use of redundant power devices and components. Control methods will be produced to reconfigure power device switching strategies in the event of faults in order to maintain converter integrity and performance. Attention will be focused on prevention of fault propagation and minimisation of the impact of the fault upon both the load and supply. Fast, accurate fault detection techniques will be implemented to determine which components have failed and the manner of failure before fault propagation occurs. Power hybridisation techniques will be employed to produce very high power density, reliable hardware. Research will be carried out into the use of new substrate materials, thermal fault mechanisms and circuit layout techniques. Safety critical analysis software will be employed in order to evaluate the developed fault tolerant systems.
