Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall aim of the programme is to develop a technique for the numerical analysis, including prediction of failure, of engineering components constructed from titanium alloys, specifically Ti6A14V as widely used in the aircraft industry, when subjected to impact loading. In the first stage experimental data will be obtained from tests on simple tension and torsion specimens at strains where the plastic flow is uniform and over a wide range of strain rate. From this data a constitutive relation and preferred failure criterion will be used to predict the impact response of a simple structure and the numerical results compared with those obtained experimentally.
