The programme deals with basic research into high-speed brushless dc drives, employing machines with outer rotor or axial field configurations, for use as fast response energy storage devices. The project will begin by evaluating the merits of various magnetic circuits, mechanical configurations, materials, bearing arrangements and enclosures, before going on to establish the design principles for the electromechanical device, as a function of energy and power requirements. A prototype device for energy storage of 0.1MJ and a peak power flow of 30kW with a 10% duty cycle is to be constructed and will have a target peak operating speed of 100,000 rpm. A power electronic converter, to control the power interchange between the energy storage device and a dc power bus, will be designed and tested. Testing of the complete system will have the aims of validating the design methods and demonstrating the potential for short-term energy storage in flywheels with integral energy conversion.
