Summary on Grant Application Form
This project has the general purpose of improving blackboard-type knowledge-based systems (KBSs) in terms of the man-machine interface, the diversity of knowledge sources which can be incorporated, and the heuristic methods for searching the solution space. The project has the specific purpose of advancing the design methodology of medical decision-making systems. It will achieve this by advancing an electromyographic (EMG) simulation, analysis and diagnostic system designed under a previous SERC contract. This advance will be possible through: (i) the incorporation of new knowledge bases, two of which are to be provided by reciprocal arrangements with international collaborators (links were formed with these collaborators from interest generated by publication of results from the previous SERC project); (ii) increased expertise within the research group which will enable the implementation of novel techniques for improving the man-machine interface (MMI), the scheduler which controls the solution search, and the signal processing within knowledge sources using procedural methods and (iii) close collaboration with practising electrophysiologists.
