Summary on Grant Application Form
The catalytic activities of novel hydrous titanium oxide (HTO) substrates exchanged with Ni and Mo for hydroprocessing reactions compare extremely favourably with their -alumina counterparts, primarily because the active metals are introduced by ion-exchange rather than by impregnation. The structure of the Ni-Mo-sulphide mixed phase on HTOs catalysts will be investigated in relation to that on other more established supports including -alumina, using EXAFS. A selection of novel sulphur-containing organometallic compounds will be investigated which offer the possibility of forming binary Mo sulphides directly via thermal decomposition with different structural characteristics to those prepared from traditional molybdate precursors. The use of both stations 9.2 and 9.3 will enable bulk and surface structure of the Ni and Mo sulphides to be compared in the systems to be investigated. Further, it is essential to examine catalysts which have been sulphided in-situ, so preventing formation of sulphate on exposure to air and enabling the influence of sulphiding conditions on the formation of the active phase to be rigorously investigated. Beam time on station 7.1 is also needed to examine catalysts that have been exposed to different calcination temperatures, which have a marked effect on catalyst activity and selectivity of the HTOs.
