Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this project is to investigate the possibility of controlling the minor and trace element content of coals by the use of fine-coal beneficiation techniques. This project is concerned with Clean Technology since it seeks to identify alternative processing strategies for the removal of harmful trace elements. Initially the work will be directed towards developing chemical analytical procedures capable of routinely analysing the trace element content of coals. These techniques will involve the digestion of the whole coal using a microwave digestion system and chemical analysis by ICP-AES. An ultrasonic nebuliser system will be utilised to enable the lower limits of detection required to be achieved. A new technique for determining the forms of sulphur in coal using microwave digestion and coulometric titration will also be further developed. Following the development these techniques, the distribution of the trace elements in maceral concentrates will be investigated. Maceral separation and identification techniques developed in the project Separation and Concentration of Coal Macerals (GR/G54542) will be utilised initially. This will include the use of bothdensity separation and froth flotation methods which will be assessed for their potential for the development of a beneficiation technique designed for trace element removal.
