Summary on Grant Application Form
To help operating companies satisfy the statutory requirement to produce a Safety Case relating to major hazards. To develop a CAD tool for the design and implementation of the project-specific software of an ESD system within the petroleum contractor's office together with procedures for quality control and assessment of performance and reliability. To initiate investigation of the use of such software to assist operators in coping with emergencies.Progress:The feasibility of the concept of a CAD tool has been demonstrated by application to an installation representative of plant operated by Amoco (UK) Ltd. Work is proceeding on the generation of generic software structures and modules to form the basis of the CASE tool. An increased number of modes of application of this object-oriented rule-based approach have been identified, in consultation with industrial collaborators (from Caltex Ltd. and Silvertech Ltd.), including defining specifications for implementation by other means, providing one of two or more diverse paths to implementation, operator training, equipment fault monitoring, and supporting oper ators in emergency situations. An study has been carried out of the use of the 'fusion method' of performing the analysis stage of software development. This has produced results of wide application, although it was based in general way upon features of the Shell Tern Alpha platform.Publications:Borer, J. R. and A J.
