For process intesification it is desirable to combine fluid-particle separation with fluid-solid reaction and so remove both particles and a component of the fluid. An example is dry scrubbing of gases. Sorbent particles and process dust are collected as a filter cake and the reaction occurs in the cake. The description of the reaction performance in the cake is complicated by the age distribution resulting from patchy cleaning and moving boundaries of individual cake patches. The objective of this proposal is to develop a mathematical model to describe combined particulate removal and gas-solid reaction processes. A methodology for simulation of multiple parallel reactors with boundaries moving at different rates will be developed by combining a probabilistic age distribution of the reactant particles with detailed chemical kinetics and the physical properties for the packed bed reactors. Emphasis will be given to the development of the probabilistic age distribution for particles in the system, an idea which has not been investigated previously.The proposed work will enable processes of this type to be designed and operated optimally.
