Summary on Grant Application Form
This research proposal is to set up and solve a 3D model of an electric railway traction system in order to determine the electromagnetic and electrostatic fields surrounding the track under the influence of various traction power and signalling systems. The aims of the work are to generate the unit-length values of track impedance and admittance pertinent to an equivalent earth-return coupled transmission line representation, and to solve problems of electromagnetic coupling between electric power, traction, signalling and communications systems. The research programme will involve modifying existing FEM code in order to unify electrostatic, conductance and impedance analyses for the same physical system geometry. An important part of the project is to define methods of accurately measuring the ground permittivity with depth and frequency. Besides improvements in FEM software, a novel aspect of the proposal will be the achievement of an accurate representation of the continuum properties of electric railway traction systems taking account of rail and ground material property variations and nonlinearities from frequency and current. Application studies will include the modelling of ground currents and the prediction of induced voltages and currents in nearby metallic cables and structures.
