Summary on Grant Application Form
The 17m, 45kw wind turbine (WT) at RAL is to be used as a test bed for the development of a blade condition monitoring system using non invasive (electrical) transducers and High Order Spectral Estimation techniques. Electrical power data is to be analysised offline using HOSE techniques to characterise the unmodified WT. Additional accelerometers mounted along a blade will provide details of frequencies that characterise its foot print . The instrumented blade will then be modified (via additional weight) and the HOSE techniques will be used to identify changes to the model (accelerometer data again being used to validate the HOSE method). A method will, therefore, be formulated to condition monitor the blades of any WT solely from its electrical power signals. The applicability of such methods to other electromechanical components will also be considered in the light of the results obtained from this project.
