Summary on Grant Application Form |
1. To develop a better understanding of a newly discovered instability in orbital flow around a cylinder, and its effects on the loading 2. To quantify the effects of the proximity of the free surface on the viscous loading on a horizontal cylinder beneath waves 3. To identify the conditions in which separation and turbulence first occur, and to develop a validated numerical model for the separated flow and associated loading The theoretical work is in three parts. (1) A linear stability analysis to identify the conditions at which instability first occurs. (2) A boundary layer analysis appropriate for small KC that includes the case for a cylinder at a small depth of submergence in waves. (3) For higher KC and separated flow, the unsteady Navier Stokes equations will be integrated numerically using an ADI methd on conformally mapped and stretched grids. Experimental and theoretical results will be compared on two levels: (a) Overall quantities such as forces and the wavelength of the hoop vortices. (b) More detailed features such as Eulerian and Lagrangian velocities Both the theoretical and experimental methods will be used to study: (i) The instability. (ii) The proximity of the free surface. (iii) Separation, turbulence and initial separated flow.
