Summary on Grant Application Form |
This rolling programme represents an integrated body of research in the surface engineering domain, incorporating three collaborating HEIs, and a range of scientific activity which spans fundamental studies (such as plasma species detection and modelling) through to application-related work (for example on high temperature sulphidation of power generation plant). It addresses both the newer, so-called 'advanced' ion and plasma based processes as well as the more 'traditional' areas of electroless deposition. In this way it forms a coordinated programme of work which aims to provide a highly relevant research base for the UK and in turn acts as the core support for a Surface Engineering Consortium which builds upon the SERC funding to obtain large-scale support from industrial and EC funding sources. The programme funds the core surface engineering activities of 9 senior academic staff. It has already enabled us to attract a further 5M worth of industrial and EC research. Though expensive, this proposal represents only a modest increase (by one, plus two half posts) on the level of activity already supported by the rolling programme.
