Summary on Grant Application Form |
The '110K' BiSCCO superconductor, 'Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Od' is potentially one of the most important for applications due to its high Tc but it is extremely difficult to synthesise pure and on a reasonable timescale. The '8OK' phase, 'Bi2Sr2CaCu2Od', has variable cation stoichiometry and its rate of synthesis has been found to depend greatly, but qualitatively, on composition. A kinetic study of the synthesis of these two phases is proposed, together with the use of high oxygen pressures to modify/ enhance synthesis rates, to investigate cation stoichiometries at high pressure and to develop improved techniques for 'post-sintering anneals' so as to optimise sample homogeneity (especially for YBa2Cu3O7) and Tc. Use of the novel technique of electrochemical oxidation in KOH solution at ambient temperature to modify the oxygen contents, and hence properties, of BiSCCO superconductors will also be investigated.
