Summary on Grant Application Form
The objectives of the programme are to produce barium titanate and lead magnesium niobate-titanate by three synthesis routes: hydrothermal processing (IRC); sol-emulsion-precipitation (Morgan Materials); flame pyrolysis (Merk). An integral part of this processing work will be the control of particle agglomeration because the particle size range produced (<1000nm agglomerates comprising of primary particles 10 to 100nm in size) is going to be dominated by surface forces. The bulk properties (size, morphology, state of agglomeration etc) and surface properties (surface charge, surface functional groups, surfactant adsorption density etc) will be determined and correlated with processing parameter data. The compaction and sintering behaviour of the powders produced by the three routes will be compared, as will the mechanical and electrical properties of the sintered ceramics. Their behaviour and properties will be compared with those of the best currently available powders. Finally, the chemical engineering requirements for achieving continuous production of ultra-fine powders with consistent properties and well-controlled processing conditions will be studied.
