The whole project is concerned with the development of predictive models for initiation and growth of damage in composite materials. Our contribution is to carry out a programme of experimental research to characterise the components of the composite - carbon fibre, epoxy resin and the interface - and then simple laminates prepared from these components. The principal tasks in Phase II of the work (which is the subject of this proposal) is to determine the conditions under which damage on a microscopic scale initiates and develops in uniaxial, cross ply and angle plied laminates. This entails a programme of carefully controlled mechanical loading whilst damage development is monitored in situ by acoustic emission and post mortem examination by x-radiography, optical and electron microscopy. It is also necessary to conduct special tests to measure specific parameters required for the mathematical models being developed by our collaborator. These typically include measurements of modulus and Poisson's ratio changes at specified damage levels and determination of precise fibre reinforcement geometry by computer image analysis. Towards the end of the programme we expect to devise critical tests to establish the validity of the models.
