Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed work is intended to extend the research carried out over the past 3 years in collaboration with the Department of Theoretical Mechanics at Nottingham under the SERC MOD grant scheme. At Aberystwyth there will be an inter-related theoretical and experimental programme to determine the way in which the macroscopic parameters that characterise fibre-reinforced materials depend on fibre concentration, temperature and fibre-alignment. The experimental programme will be directed at using the instruments developed under previous grants to observe how the macroscopic response of different model composites depends on their microstructure. This will be linked to the theoretical programme of rheological characterisation at both Aberystwyth and Nottingham. The three-dimensional numerical code which has proved successful in simulating the normal compression of fibre-reinforced materials will be extended to deal with more complex forming processes and other rheological models.
