During the high temperature use or processing of Group IV elements in an oxidising atmosphere, a hard layer of oxygen enriched material forms beneath the conventional oxide layer. The thickness of this layer varies between 0.005 to 0.02 cm, depending on the processing conditions, and, if this layer is not removed, cracks can be initiated in the hard layer and propagate through the body of the metal. The layer is usually removed by either pickling or grinding but this approach cannot be applied to engineered components which have oxidised during use. Instead of destructively removing the layer, it is proposed that an electrochemical technique be investigated to remove the oxygen. If successful, this technique could be used for the upgrading of scrap titanium. Furthermore, by using a fused salt, retained in a ceramic blanket, it is proposed to investigate the use of this technique to regenerate oxidised components.
