Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research aims to develop mobile robot systems capable of fully autonomous sensor-based navigation in indoor application environments such as warehouses, factories, offices and hospitals. The work encompasses both the development of vehicle components, such as sensors and drive system, and the development of methods for integrating these components into specific application areas. The project builds on two earlier ACME projects (GR./E42419 and FR/G38375) and has three primary sub-goals; to exploit our current work on decentralised system theory in developing fully modular vehicle components, to extend navigation theory to provide both integrated mapping functions and the ability to operate in cluttered (dense target) environments, and to develop a system-wide integration of this and our previous work to enable both proper systems management and an effective link into specific application environments.
