Summary on Grant Application Form |
To undertake a comprehensive experimental and numerical modelling study in order to extend the knowledge base of the durability of polymer composite materials in marine environments, by providing hitherto unavailable information on the performance characteristics and behaviour of these materials under impingement erosion conditions in seawater. The propose project comprises a comprehensive investigation of the behaviour of polymer composites under impingement erosion conditions in seawater environments. Information on this aspect of the durability of polymer composite materials is relatively sparse, but it is an important aspect in the prediction of the performance of structural composites as used in pipework and fittings under turbulent hydraulic conditions. The project will comprise an integrated experimental and numerical study of the impingement erosion of a number of glass reinforced polymer composite materials. Conditions to be investigated include seawater with and without solid particle loading. The information obtained will be used to improve both life prediction and selection of such materials for marine applications.
