Summary on Grant Application Form
The extraction of atomic structural information about a surface from a low energy electron diffraction pattern has traditionally depended on two distinct steps: firstly the calculation of the diffraction pattern for a given model structure, and secondly a search amongst a range of structural models for a best fit with the experimental data in the area of low energy electron diffraction (LEED), accurate algorithms have long existed for performing the first step, and effort in recent years has tended to concentrate on developing efficient strategies for the second. In photoelectron diffraction, both steps are currently the subject of active research. During the visit of Professor D Saldin, of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, to Imperial College, it is proposed to carry out work in both sets of these areas.
