The UK screen printing industry has a current annual turnover well in excess of a billion pounds. The majority of these companies are small to medium size employees. A recent survey estimated the level of waste in current production to be of the order of 40%. The objectives of this project are to improve the quality of screen printing, reduce waste, to increase productivity and to establish the technical feasibility of a high speed quality rotary screen press. Inherent in the process is the distortion of the screen due to the pressure applied by the squeegee and its drag on the screen. One of the objectives of the project is to develop the algorithms to compensate for this distortion during the production of the frame.The major advantage of screen printing is its ability to print with any medium (e.g. temperature sensitive ink) onto any substrate with the potential for very high quality reproduction. The major disadvantage is the low speed of the process which is ultimately limited by the reciprocating nature of the press. A high quality rotary screen printing process would, as well as the increase in productivity, also open new markets, such as the installation in line with a web offset press.
