Attempts to transmit information via the sense of touch using a vibrator on the skin (eg speech information to the profoundly hearing impaired) have been hindered by a lack of relevant data on the sense of touch. This project will study the perception of computer-generated tactile stimuli with amplitude and/or frequency modulation on a timescale of 20-500ms. The extent to which bandwidth-limited stimuli can be used will also be investigated - these are much easier to produce in a body-worn device than the stimuli generally used in laboratory-based experiments on tactile perception. Results from these experiments are of intrinsic interest, since they relate to the perception of natural tactile stimuli; they are also of practical importance for the optimisation of information transfer in tactile prostheses. The final phase of the project involves application of earlier results to the tactile transmission of speech-derived information to the profoundly deaf.
