Summary on Grant Application Form |
Recent advances have led to an improved ability to control the type and monitor the effects of light with which atoms interact. We propose to investigate a number of novel effects made possible by such advances. Firstly we will carry out in-depth analyses of the physics of atoms trapped in troughs of light waves forming regular 1D, 2D and 3D lattices. A linear response theory will be developed to facilitate application to scattering of light by the vibrational excitations and to explore the influence of trapping density and of spin and statistics of such novel ensembles. Secondly we will calculate the time evolution of the orbital angular momentum and torque that are envisaged to arise for atoms immersed in light fields endowed with orbital angular momentum attributes eg Lagurre-Gaussian modes and light fields associated with resonators of various geometries. Finally we will analyse the physics of laser light effects on atoms moving in the vicinity of macroscopic surfaces and explore their influence on the atomic gross motion.
