Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this proposal is to utilise the IRC's plasma melting facilities to carry out prescribed experiments to provide validation of the thermal/fluid flow models developed by the partners in the proposed LINK programme. Two materials, one nickel-based and the other titanium-based, will be studied. An important initial task will be to use the plasma button melter to measure the temperature distribution induced by the plasma under a range of operating conditions, in metal targets. The IRC's large plasma furnace together with specially manufactured 5 inch (125mm) and 8 inch (200mm) diameter water-cooled and thermocoupled crucibles, will then be used to study the thermal and microstructural dependence of ingots cast under a range of operating conditions. Extensive metallographic examination of the cast ingots will then provide data for comparison with the predictions of the thermal/ fluid flow models
