Summary on Grant Application Form
The aims of the work to be undertaken by Professor Kaufman are (i) to further our understanding of the factors that lead to the formation of anti phase boundaries (APBs) in some TiAl-based alloys, and also to establish how APBs influence the mechanical properties of this class of alloys; (ii) to investigate the effects of alloying on the phase equilibria, transformations and mechanical properties of Ti-Al alloys with particular emphasis on those alloys in which the beta phase has been stabilised and (iii) to study the effects of certain alloying additions on the massive transformation in these alloys and to determine if massively transformed t can be subsequently decomposed via heat treatments into two phase 2 + t structures with properties that are superior to those produced in similar alloys using more conventional approaches.
