Summary on Grant Application Form
The best optical spectra seen in recent experiments arises in materials where the key idealisations (infinite perfect structures) - which so far formed the basis of our understanding of optical spectra in Si-SiGe and of device design and modelling - do not apply. The techniques for modelling finite length imperfect heterostructures I have recently developed are well suited to study the origin and the form of optical spectra in Si-SiGe structures. During 1992 I have developed a new theory and carried out preliminary calculations which suggest that the spectra are related to extrinsic/interface properties, and that the position of the peak and the spectral shape of the optical response exhibit a significant shift from the frequency predicted by the standard (idealised) models. The purpose of this application is to implement the above programme and bring it to a definitive conclusion.
