Summary on Grant Application Form |
Thermometry based on broadband Degenerate Four Wave Mixing, DFWM, will be developed for application to turbulent flames and engines. Accuracy and precision of single shot measurements will be assessed in a well characterised laminar flow burner and optimisation by eg maximising the bandwidth of the lasers used and use of weaker absorbing transitions will be investigated. The second stage will study DFWM thermometry in turbulent flames and develop strategies to minimise the deletrious geometries. In the third stage the technique will be applied to measurements in an ic engine simulator prior to tests in other turbulent flame situations.A new technique for velocimetry of combusting and non-combusting flows will be developed. This technique utilises the Dopplet shift of broadband DFWM signals and will be tested on NO flows and OH in flames. Its primary advantage will be that it does not require seeding of the flows with particles and so could be used safely in engine applications, it will provide spatially and temporally resolved measurements important for diagnostics of turbulent of transient flows.
