Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is to support a joint project linking the manufacture of cold-drawn steel products with the measurement and modelling of the residual stresses that result and are of importance to the behaviour of the final product. Multi-pass cold-drawing of low- and high- carbon steel wire will be performed at the Dept of Manufacturing Engineering, Loughborough, to provide samples for residual stress analysis. Comparison samples produced under industrial conditions will be provided by British Steel. Residual stress distributions in the samples will be derived from neutron scattering measurements, to be made initially at AECL, Chalk River, Canada, under an existing collaborative agreement with Salford University, where analysis of the experimental data will be performed. Finite-element modelling of the multi-pass drawing process and residual stress formation will be carried out at Loughborough, extending current work on single-pass drawing. The results will be valuable in the control of the manufacturing process to optimise the properties of steel wire and rod where residual stresses are of importance to the performance of the final product.
