Summary on Grant Application Form |
The problem of life-prediction for composite materials has usually been tackled by the derivation of conventional S/N curves for constant-stress cycling, followed by variable stress or block testing. Analysis is relatively crude and depends on the identification of some physical model the predictions of which must then be compared with the actual results. The problem is that this approach requires extensive data gathering and likely physical models differ for different composites. The application of neural network methods offers the engineer a completely different approach which eliminates the need for physical models and which provides reasonable predictions after only limited testing which are then gradually refined as the neural model is increasingly educated by the incorporation of new test results.
