Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose the construction of a novel instrument: a pulsed magnet incorporating a dilution refrigerator. Initially the system will provide for experiments in fields of 5OT at temperatures down to 30mK, but ultimately 60T and 10mK are expected. We shall collaborate closely with Oxford Instruments Ltd to develop a new non-metallic top-loading dilution refrigerator. The overall system will open new avenues of research in the areas of superconduc- tivity and heavy fermion physics. In the former, the quenching of the quasiparticle mass in intense fields will provide a critical test of our understanding of quantum oscillatory phenomena in the heavy fermion state, and experiments will be performed in semiconducting heavy fermions, such as CeNiSn. In the latter, evidence will be sought for field induced re-entrant superconductivity in intense fields at very low temperatures.
