Summary on Grant Application Form |
The objective of this proposal is to obtain a workstation which will provide the numerical analysis group of the School of Mathematics at Bristol University with a powerful number crunching machine and a graphical facility to display the solution of three-dimensional and other calculations. The machine will be used by an existing PDRA for developing numerical algorithms for solving 3D elliptic PDEs and for visualising the solutions of these calculations. This work will investigate the effectiveness of error estimation strategies and grid adaptation methods for these calculations and will extend and apply conjugate gradient methods for the solution of the systems resulting from discretisation. The numerical methods will be tested using problems with a known solution structure, and then applied to tackle open analytical questions for the systems. The workstation will also be used for other computationally intensive projects undertaken by the group. In particular, the development of adaptive moving mesh methods for parabolic PDEs, reduced basis methods for detecting Hopf bifurcations, conjugate gradient-like methods for the Stokes problem and the study of power series methods for bifurcation phenomena.
