The Universities of Birmingham, Newcastle and Ulster wish to collaborate on the third phase of the experimental work on the SERC Flood Channel Facility concerned with sediment transport and flow at high river stage in straight channels. It is proposed that further collaboration between Newcastle, Sheffield and Bristol would involve experiments concerning meandering channels.Initially, new instrumentation on the SERC-FCF and a 2.46m wide tilting flume would be tested and evaluated. Experiments would be then undertaken in both straight and meandering channels with bed load and suspended load for a well-defined series of conditions of mobile and fixed boundaries with in-bank and over-bank flows.Smaller scale experiments would also be carried out at the University of Newcastle which would concentrate on the regime condition and overbank deposition in straight and meandering channels. The main aims of this proposal are to develop models of regime behaviour of a mobile-bed channel in a flood plain and overbank sediment deposition as a function of flow, sediment load, channel planform and sediment size.
