Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purpose of the proposed work is to study the interaction of ascending and descending buoyant plumes of the sort that occur in static cooling and displacement ventilation systems. The plumes created in typical current designs will first be characterised experimentally in an environmental chamber. The main work involves the comparison of measurements of the flow and temperature fields in a purpose-built test cell with predictions from an in-house CFD code employing a range of buoyancy-affected turbulence models. A further aspect of the CFD work will be to study the speed and numerical accuracy of various convection discretisation schemes. The project is designed to make a significant contribution to the validation of turbulence models for use in the simulation of buoyant flows and support the evolution of CFD codes for room air flow applications. The immediate application is to displacement ventilation systems with static cooling; a more general aim is to improve the prediction of the interaction of buoyant flows in rooms to allow the optimisation of the thermodynamic performance of cooling systems for buildings.
