Summary on Grant Application Form |
The fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth rates will be determined under biaxial loading for a range of brittle and ductile, semi-crystalline and amorphous polymers. Effects of mean stress will be investigated and related to molecular orientation at crack tips introduced by remote biaxial loadings. Design data for biaxial stress situations will be provided from the work. Virtually none exists at present and design procedures ignore the effect of the 'second stress'. This cannot be correct if experience with metals is anything to go by.
