Summary on Grant Application Form
A programme consisting of investigations into the co-ordination and polymerisation of styrene has been devised. Studies are categorised as follows:i) The synthesis and characterisation of novel neutral and cationic bis-(cyclopentadienyl)niobium and tantalum complexes in oxidation states +3, +4 and +5, using chemical and electrochemical techniques.ii) An assessment of the application of such complexes to alkene (principally styrene) polymerisation.iii) Investigation, by GPC, viscometry and NMR measurements, of the molecular weight (Mn), polydispersity (Mw/Mn) and stereoregularity of polystyrene.iv) Development of stereospecific and chiral group 5 metallocene catalysts for control of polystyrene tacticity.v) Use of bis-(cyclopentadienyl)niobium (III) complexes as models for the investigation of preferred orientation of alkene co-ordination.vi) Assessment of mono- and non-cyclopentadienyl group 5 compounds as styrene polymerisation catalysts.
