Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall objective of the rolling programme is to provide a centre for scientific research on Al and Ti particulate and fibre reinforced MMCs associated with industrial demonstrator component programmes. Scientific research will concentrate on: (1) using thermal and flow modelling to control processing conditions and resulting Al alloy MMC microstructures during reactive spray forming and squeeze cast infiltration; (2) developing novel continuous CVD bilayer and graded coatings on SiCf; (3) manufacturing t-TiAl/SiCf by simultaneous vacuum plasma spraying and fibre winding followed by diffusion bonding; (4) developing novel acoustic emission, x-ray microtomography and image analysis methods to understand void nucleation and growth fracture of Al alloy/SiCp and Ti alloy/SiCf MMCs; and (5) modelling and monitoring of damage mechanisms to develop design rules for MMC lifetime under complex load and thermal cycling sequences.
