The hybrid theory is a continuum theory of optical vibrations in microstructures. It has so far produced analytic results which are in very good agreement with microscopic theory. It is proposed here that this theory, so far applied to GaAs/AlAs structures, be extended to deal with systems with arbitrary elastic and electro-magnetic properties. Such a general treatment will not only lead to a better understanding of how quantum confinement affects the vibrational spectrum, but may also form the basis for the theory of the engineering of optical vibrations in such microstructures. Clearly the prospect of being able to control the strength of LO-carrier interactions would be of a considerable significance technologically, eg for the operation of HEMT structures and of quantum well lasers. Our proposal seeks to explore such a possibility by considering a wide range of material combinations, eg III-V, II-VI, I-VII structures in low dimensions (2D, 1D and OD) and the presence of external fields eg static E and B fields and rf fields.
