Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal follows a feasibility study carried out over 1992-93 which confirmed that Cu+ doped and co-doped -aluminas have strong potential as media for tunable inorganic lasers through the visible region. Methods to dope and 11 -alumina with Cu+, Cu/K and Cu/Ag and with lanthanides and transition metals, by low temperature ion exchange, will be perfected. Detailed spectroscopy and lifetime studies will be made to provide understanding of structural and radiative characteristics. Tunable optical gain and laser studies on selected -aluminas will be carried out in compact laser cavities.
