Summary on Grant Application Form
A simulated municipal waste combustion flue gas apparatus is to be constructed and the interaction of mercury vapour and mercury compounds with hydrogen chloride, sulphur dioxide and hydrocarbons is to be investigated. The chemical speciation of inorganic and organic mercury compounds in the exhaust flue gases is to be determined in relation to flue gas conditions; the concentration of oxygen, gas temperature, residence time, reactant concentration etc. will be investigated. The chemical reaction mechanisms leading to the formation of inorganic and organic mercury species during the incineration of waste will be developed.
