Summary on Grant Application Form
To study the performance of multirate digital signal processing systems with reference to the higher order statistics of the input and output signals. To derive methodologies which incorporate higher order statistical performance criteria into the design and implementation of the analysis and synthesis filters required for multirate systems.Progress:The effect of basic multirate building blocks such as downsamplers and upsamplers on the higher order statistics of signals is being investigated. Various deterministic and random signals are being tested with these systems and also their interconnections with linear filters, since down/up samplers are usually combined with anti-liasing and anti-imaging filters in practical systems.Multirate systems provide a direct link between stationary and cyclo-stationary signals; the effect on the higher order statistics is significant especially when the time-varying nature of these building blocks is considered. In second order statistics the effect of the phase properties of the linear filters is insignificant, since second order statistics are phase blind. However this is not the case with higher order statistics. The application of multirate systems to noise reduction and signal reconstruction of non-stationary and non-linear signals via filter banks is also being considered. Multirate filter banks provide an ideal environment for such applications. This project has only recently started and is initially concentrating upon identifying the effect of basic multirate operations on the higher order statistics of representative examples of typical input signals.
