It is apparent that buildings subjected to blast loading often suffer such serious damage to their cladding, that the debris constitutes a serious risk to people inside and outside the building. After the explosion the building's structural frame may be undamaged but the loss of the external walling makes the building unusable until expensive repairs have been carried out. A further serious loss is that of the business records from the offices exposed to the blast and these may be irreplaceable. There is an urgent need for research on cladding under blast loading and from previous work done on steel and concrete, unglazed cladding panels, the applicants have identified the urgent need to investigate the response cladding fixing assemblies. The investigation will be to use analytical and experimental modelling to produce results useful for the assessment of cladding fixings to blast loads and also, to transfer the assessment procedures into a design methodology.
