Summary on Grant Application Form
An experimental investigation will be performed of the modifications to the linear and nonlinear optical properties of a medium in the presence of a strong coupling field that induces transparency. A single mode tunable pulsed laser will provide this strong coupling field in the study of a number of atomic schemes. These include lithium where both linear optical properties (induced transparency) and nonlinear optical properties (four wave mixing) will be investigated under the same experimental conditions. VUV generation from four wave mixing schemes enhanced by transparency will be investigated in the noble gases Kr and Xe. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the fundamental coherence physics of the phenomena and on establishing the likely limits to these effects in practically realisable schemes.
