Summary on Grant Application Form |
The purpose of the research will be to develop methods for the determination of thermodynamic properties of fluids and, simultaneously, of the corresponding intermolecular pair potential from existing speed of sound data. Integral equation methods will be used to relate all of the thermodynamic properties to model intermolecular potential energy functions, the parameters of which will be optimised to fit the speeds of sound. The project will be directed towards the entire gas region and the super-critical compressed fluid region and to systems composed of both spherical and linear or psuedo-linear molecules. Three-body forces will be included from the start so that real rather than effective pair potentials are obtained. The project will be conducted in stages during which the integral equations methods will be applied in turn to spherical molecules, to linear or pseudo-linear molecules and finally to mixed systems. The applications will be in the areas of accurate determination of thermodynamic properties (all the equation of state information including density and heat capacity will be obtained) and in applied molecular theory where there is an urgent need for realistic intermolecular potentials for polyatomic molecules.
